It’s Never Easy

(Harbinger of Sorrow)

Author's Note: The EPB has struck again - this time in the form of a Metallica song. This part can stand alone right now, but there is more to come.
Setting: Season 4
Disclaimer: Not mine...If it was, we'd have a Farscape channel

The air burned his lungs as he took in another ragged breath. Leaning against the wall in the alleyway, he hoped he had lost his pursuer. He tried to figure out how he had become separated from his unit. They had kept the standard tight formation through the city streets, suddenly pulse fire rained down upon them. The civilians scattered into any nearby building during the incursion. Soon he realized that he was the focus of the assault. He ran for cover trying to stay one step ahead, but it seemed every time he found a microt of peace, it would begin again. Soon he found himself running. He knew a Peacekeeper should never run, but he didn’t want to die today. He saw the alley and ran into it, thinking he could hide in there, at least long enough to take a breath and think of how to rejoin his men. He looked up as he heard the step on the mud caked ground, reaching automatically for his sidearm. His eyes widened in terror when he realized he must have lost it during his flight.

He looked back up as the raspy voice filled the still air, “Where is she?”

He knew who the man spoke of, the rumors had spread quickly through the ranks of Peacekeepers, but no one knew for certain if they were true and no one knew the answer to the question that was always asked.

He shook his head, “I don’t know…” He didn’t think it was possible, but the eyes staring at him grew even colder.

“That’s too bad.” Came the reply from the leather clad figure as he raised his weapon. The shot caught him in the throat, the force of the blast caused his body to rebound off of the wall behind him. Falling forward, his body landed in the large puddle of muddy water at his feet. The last image he saw as he choked on mud and blood was John Crichton turning his back on him walking out into the street to seek out other Peacekeepers for the answer to his eternal question.
