Waiting for Superman: Diosfrom the Flaming Lips song of the same name |
"Dios" does not, as is often assumed, mean "God", neither in Latin nor in Greek ("deus" and "qeoV" (theos), respectively). It is, instead, a Homeric epithet - that is, an adjective commonly used in the epics of Homer, for example in describing Akhilleus - roughly translatable to "shining", "noble" or "godlike". The nearest to meaning "God" that it gets is being the genitive of "ZeuV", and thus meaning "of Zeus": or perhaps being the first month in the Ancient Macedonian calendar, which could be God. You never know with these things. |
