Googleshng's Guide to Making the Most of Your Time

Every so often, I cc myself an e-mail I send that's going to a friend of mine so that if I'm in a rush, I have a prefabricated rant ready to fling up. Handy no?

Lesson 1: Nickels and Dimes

One of the most significant causes of people missing out on free time is the way their free time is distributed. While it is true that large blocks of free time are the most useful, there are countless times during the average person's day when they have nothing to do for a minute or two, and still more times when a free fraction of a minute springs up. While these brief moments do not provide enough time to do things like watch a movie or playing a nice long game, there are many activities which can be pursued quite comfortably in these small cracks. For example:

  • - Reading a book.
  • - Playing a portable video game.
  • - Working on a sketch, or other creative outlet.

This week, carry a book by your favorite author around with you. Whenever you find a free second, be it waiting for food to be cooked, standing in a long line, during your lunch break, during a commercial break, waiting for a class to start, or riding the bus, pull your book out, and read a few pages.

With practice, you should be able to finish off a novel or two every month just in the cracks between tasks, and you may even devise some tricks to improve your memory while you're at it!
