Devil's Advocate Reviews

There is an unfortunate effect which tends to come about in the game reviewing field, sometimes as a result of sinister back room dealings, sometimes from weird political situations, and sometimes from the weird mix of peer pressure, getting swept up in hype, and attempting to rationalize the money spent on a game. A few times it even comes from weird personal biases. No matter what the cause (or combination of causes), a given review of a game is always going to be colored pretty severely one way or the other by the circumstances under which it's released. Sequels to popular games (and games from certain publishers) get automatic good press (and even public reception) even when they don't deserve it, and it's a rare game that comes out of nowhere, or a source of games the reviewer otherwise isn't interested in gets its proper share of attention.

While some value would exist in properly tearing a new one into the various terrible games out there everyone's willing to turn a blind eye to so as not to stir up trouble, this monthly feature is about the other side of the problem. Coming to the defense of games which, if you go by general world of mouth, are absolutely horrible (if they ever get mentioned at all), but which (at least in the reviewer's opinion) are, if not great, at least enjoyable enough to deserve better treatment than they receive.
