we passed the porch, passed the front walk, took a bite of grass and then we drove away, you jumped in my lap almost got us in an accident and then at the rest stop when that puppy barked and made you frightened i thought you'd never calm down but real soon i was enlightened... yeah, real soon i'd been enlightened... you're my road bunny, and i'm learning all the time i thought that you'd be thumping, having accidents on back seat cushions but we drive so much you found some patience so pass the pellets, turn the station you don't need a carrier for the road from where the wind's a dusty breeze to where the air is cool and wet i thought we'd find you cowering like you do each time you're at the vet but you sit on the back ledge dozing cars go by, they point and stare i try to act indifferent but i'm proud of my courageous hare... yes i'm so proud... you're my road bunny, and i'm learning all the time i thought you'd show that bunnies were all timid and not made for travel but i thought i saw your whiskers twitching as if to say "the view's bewitching" you don't need a carrier for the road and your ears turn and pivot as relaxed as if you were at home and you flop in the sunlight just the same way you do at home i thought "life on the road, it could never be a habit" but when my friends and i are going on a trip i always have to take my rabbit so i go to the vending machines and you hop around on the backseat cover sniffing at the seat belts and discovering a cracker and sometimes people look at me saying "hey man, are you insane? there's straw in the glove box!" so i tell them that it's timothy hay... and we're on our way... how 'bout it, road bunny (oooh, bunny) i heard about this rabbit in a family of travelers and he spent his days at the back seat window riding high upon some pillows but you just can't build a burrow on the road but there's a fear you've finally faced you're not afraid to ride someplace you don't need a carrier on the road
